New Landscaping for the Playground Corner, Sponsored by The Friends of Marshall Square Park

The Friends of Marshall Square Park recently completed another new project in Marshall Square Park.  The latest project includes new landscaping and a new low fence for the area along the busy corners of N. Matlack and Marshall Streets (the playground corner).  The project was a component of the overall Master plan for the park.  Anne F. Walters, Landscape Architect and Founding Board Member of FMSP, prepared the plans for the project, obtained the required approvals from the Borough of West Chester and was responsible for coordinating the bidding and installation of the project.  Jeff Beitel, President of the FMSP, ...

Doggy Waste Bags Are Back!

West Chester Public installed new holders and filled them with biodegradable bags in Marshall Square Park this morning. With the recent ban on plastic bags when shopping, getting the bags back in the park will really help keep “things” from getting underfoot. Thanks, Public Works!!

Small Kids Playground Opens Just In Time For Summer!

The new Marshall Square Park small kids playground and swing set will be open the week of May 16 – just in time for summer! The new playground includes a new play set designed for younger children and a more versatile swing set that includes accessible swings (a couple of parts on back-order, we are unsure the delivery date). The mulch is soft and deep, and the newly seeded area (post-grading) covered with straw. Fencing to protect the trees during installation will also be removed shortly. The new playground is the result of years of honchoing by Chantale Fieldhouse (her kids are now ...

The 3 main projects were to: pick up the numerous downed sticks and branches (several of the kids were especially good at this!) rake up a few heavy areas of leaves and seedpods, including the brick ...

A Tree Falls in Fountain!

On 5/20/20, a very large limb from a Pin Oak came down in MSP’s fountain area. The fountain itself looks okay; but it’s still off, so cross your fingers. Its top is broken, the bottom tier lost a chunk, the iron fence is damaged, and Lane and Jim’s bench is destroyed. A Borough crew fired up its giant cherry picker and found that the fallen limb had exposed a rotten trunk. For safety, the crew fell the severely compromised oak, which opened a ???? view of East Marshall Street. If there are silver linings, the droppings from that tree were causing severe clogging; and the fountain escaped disaster by ...
